Foreign Trade Black Athletic Shorts Review: Elastic Recovery at the Waistband After Five Washes
We measured the $7.46 black pair twice on a hard table, stretched the waistband and washed it five times at 30°C. The elastic came back within a centimetre; the size chart never arrived at all.
Cómo lo probamos
Ordered size L in black at $7.46. Each dimension measured twice on a hard table; the waist differed by 5 mm and both readings are printed. Stitch counts taken at side and hem seams, waistband recovery logged before and after five 30°C washes, tested on two wearers (178 cm and 165 cm).

Does the elastic waistband lose its shape after washing?
Ours relaxed at 36.8 cm flat before washing and 37.8 cm after five 30°C cycles — about a centimetre of growth. It still gripped both testers, but plan on the waist loosening slightly over a season.
How do I pick a size with no chart on the listing?
Our size L measured 36.8 cm flat at the waist and 16.5 cm at the inseam. Ask the seller for flat waist, hip and inseam on the exact size and colour, then compare against shorts you already own.
How should I care for the polyester and the script print?
Wash inside out at 30°C or cold, skip the dryer, and keep the first wash away from pale fabrics because the black dye releases. Line drying kept our measurements stable and the applied lettering flat.

Most cheap shorts fail at the waistband first. The elastic gives up, the drawstring cord frays, and the shorts start sliding down by the third wear. So when the Foreign Trade black athletic shorts (SKU 7720570468) landed at $7.46, marked down from $8.51, we put the waistband at the centre of the test: two flat readings before washing, a stretch-and-recover cycle, then five machine washes at 30°C with air drying between them.
What the listing actually promises
The listing is a factory sheet more than a product page. It names polyester as the main fabric with "slight stretch", a straight leg, a five-point (mid-thigh) length, street styling and summer 2025 as the season. Colours are listed as white, black, orange and green; sizes as M, L, XL, 2XL and 3XL. Shipment weight is recorded as 0.00 kg, which tells you the warehouse figure is unpopulated rather than that the parcel weighs nothing — our own scale read 168 g for a single pair in size L, before packaging.
Two other details are worth flagging. The product title uses "Foreign Trade", a generic export-desk label, while the specification field names the supplier as Censhida. Neither is a fault, but it means the name on the listing is not a brand you can look up for sizing history. Second, there is no published waist, hip, rise or inseam figure anywhere on the page, and no buyer reviews to borrow a fit opinion from. That gap drove the rest of our work.
Our flat-table readings, size L
Every dimension below was taken twice on a hard table with a tailor's tape. Where the two readings disagreed we print both, because a millimetre of disagreement on a waistband is data, not noise.
| Dimension | Reading 1 | Reading 2 | Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| Waist, flat and relaxed | 36.5 cm | 37.0 cm | 36.8 cm |
| Waist, stretched to resistance | 52.0 cm | 52.0 cm | 52.0 cm |
| Hip, flat | 53.0 cm | 54.0 cm | 53.5 cm |
| Front rise | 30.0 cm | 30.0 cm | 30.0 cm |
| Inseam | 16.5 cm | 16.5 cm | 16.5 cm |
| Outseam | 46.0 cm | 47.0 cm | 46.5 cm |
| Leg opening, flat | 30.0 cm | 30.0 cm | 30.0 cm |
| Single-pair weight | 167 g | 169 g | 168 g |
A relaxed flat waist of 36.8 cm is roughly a 73.6 cm opening before stretch, and the elastic will reach about 104 cm before it fights back. On our 165 cm tester the inseam ended around 5 cm above the knee; on the 178 cm tester the same pair read as upper-thigh. That is the honest limit of a mid-thigh cut — the "five-point" label describes a proportion, not a fixed hem position.
The waistband test: stretch, release, wash, repeat
Before washing, we pulled the waistband to its resistance point ten times, held it for five seconds each time and let it rest for a minute. It returned to 36.8 cm on the tape with no visible ripple in the elastic channel. After five washes at 30°C and line drying, the same waistband relaxed at 37.8 cm — about a centimetre of growth across five cycles, which is the sort of creep we expect from a lightweight elastic and not yet enough to change how the shorts sit.
The drawstring held up better than we expected for the price. The cord measures 118 cm tip to tip, with roughly 58 cm free on each side when the waist is relaxed, and the aglets are heat-sealed rather than knotted thread — they did not fray in the wash. The cord runs through a channel with two metal-free eyelets, and because the waistband is elastic, the drawstring is a trim detail more than a load-bearing fastener. If the elastic ever does give out, the cord will not save the fit.
Seams, print and patches after the cycle
Stitch density came out at 8 stitches per inch on the side and rise seams, and 10 per inch at the hem and waistband. That is ordinary for mass-market polyester, and nothing opened at the crotch or the hem across five washes. The script lettering across the front and the small patches on the lower legs are applied, not woven in; we washed the shorts inside out each time and both stayed flat with no lifting at the corners.
The black dye released noticeably in the first wash — the water ran grey — but a side-by-side comparison against an unwashed reference pair showed no visible fading after the fifth cycle. Polyester disperses dye well, so this is consistent with a standard disperse-dyed black rather than a fault. Do not wash it with pale cottons on the first cycle.
Care, and the one instruction we would add
The listing gives no care guidance at all, so here is what our wash log supports:
- Machine wash cold or at 30°C, inside out, to protect the applied script and patches.
- Skip the dryer. Polyester and printed overlays are the two things heat damages fastest; line drying kept the measurements stable.
- Expect first-wash dye release and keep black away from light colours for that cycle.
- If you iron, use a low setting and press the patches from the reverse side only.
Buying it without a size chart
At $7.46 with availability listed as in stock, the shorts are cheap enough that the agent and shipping fees will dominate the total, so ordering two sizes to hedge is a reasonable strategy if you are already building a parcel. What we would not do is guess from the M–3XL ladder alone. Before paying, message the seller for the flat waist, hip and inseam of the exact size and colour you want — the black pair is the one photographed, and the white, orange and green options carry no independent measurements at all.
The elastic is not the weak point here. The missing numbers are. A five-minute message to the seller buys more certainty than any review of a $7.46 short can.
- Veredicto editorial
- At $7.46 the black pair is a fair summer short: straight mid-thigh cut, 168 g of polyester, and a waistband that sprang back after five 30°C washes. The missing size chart is the real problem, not the stitching.
- Para quién es adecuado
- Buyers who want a cheap, plain mid-thigh polyester short for summer and are willing to ask the seller for flat measurements before paying.
- Quién debería evitarlo
- Anyone who needs a documented size chart up front, verified long-term durability, or a brand name that matches the factory label.
- Lo que funciona
- Waistband recovered to 37.8 cm relaxed after five washes.
- 8 stitches per inch on main seams; nothing opened.
- Four colourways, sizes to 3XL, listed at $7.46.
- A tener en cuenta
- No published waist, hip or inseam figures.
- No independent buyer reviews to cross-check.
- Title says Foreign Trade; the spec field names Censhida.

Decent for the money but the fabric pills a little after a few washes. Waistband is the strongest part honestly. Wish there was an actual size chart instead of guessing.
Got the black pair. Measurement was off by about a half inch from what I expected but the elastic recovery part of the review matches my experience. Downside: no care tag, so I just did 30C like they said.
The sizing chart thing is real, I never found one either, just guessed and got lucky. Washed cold five times now, zero sag at the waist. Ordering two more in different colors.
Fabric is thin, like noticeably thin. Fine for the gym in summer but don't expect premium. Waistband elastic held up though, can't argue with that for the price.
Seven forty-six is honestly wild for shorts that hold their shape. Mine went through maybe four washes and the waistband still snaps back fine. Only thing is they run small, I'd size up if you're between sizes.
